In South Korea, hip hop expanded into a cultural phenomenon in Seoul, Busan and Daegu. The movement has been growing since the mid-90's, and has been gaining attention internationally, as Koreans have won various championships around the world since the early 2000s. Aside from mainstream K-pop infused hip hop, there is also an underground scene that has developed throughout South Korea. Online webzines like Hiphop Playa have contributed to spreading the culture.

Early artists included 3534, Seo Taiji and Boys, Deux, and DJ DOC. The Korean language was used almost exclusively. Seo Taiji, coming from a heavy metal music background, often featured heavy metal guitars in his mixes, and other artists also incorporated techno influences. A few artists, such as Seo Taiji and Yuk Kak Soo (육각수), also incorporated influences from traditional Korean music such as pansori or nongak (farmers' music). One that was distinctive was Seo Taiji's "Come Back Home", with its vocal/production style resembling Cypress Hill. The first "rap" album that featured rap in every track was Kim Jin Pyo's first album in 1997. First Hip-Hop song in South Korea was Gim-sat-gat(김삿갓) by Hong-seo-bum(홍서범). According to Epik High's rapper Tablo, "The form [of Korean Hip Hop], at least, has definitely been mastered now — the beats, the rhymes, the performances, the look — it’s indistinguishable from the United States scene. The social relevance, however, has a long way to go. The message is slowly catching up to the medium."
Many rap artists have been successful in the mainstream of Korean music. These include rappers such as Verbal Jint, Jinusean, T.O.P., G-Dragon, Zico, Outsider, 1TYM, MC Sniper, Psy, Cho PD, Dynamic Duo, Drunken Tiger, Jay Park, Supreme Team, Untouchable, dok2, Leessang and Epik High.
As elsewhere, there has always been a conflict between mainstream and underground listeners. As many K-pop groups use hiphop in their songs, people became used to associating hip-hop with these sugar-coated lyrics. Underground rappers and their fans have heavily criticized this, which fuelled many skilled underground rappers to stick with working as an independent artist rather than under a major mainstream label.

B-boying enjoys a great deal of popularity in South Korea, so much so that it has become a great cultural export for the country as the South Korean government tries to promote a dynamic image of South Korea. South Korean B-boys say that the B-boy movement dates as far back as 1990s where young men took up the activity as a result of the lack of diversion to military duties. But it is wasn't until 2001 that they received international recognition, when they debuted at the 2001 annual Battle of the Year competition in Germany represented by the crew Visual Shock, although coming 4th in the competition the following year (2002) the Korean team Expression came back to win the competition. Since then South Korea has won several Battle of the Year titles, and breaking crews frequently appear on national television. As of 2009, South Korea is the world's leading country in breaking. Some of the well-known breaking crews include Rivers crew, Drifterz crew, Gamblerz crew, T.I.P., Jinjo crew, Extreme Crew, Last For One, Expression, Maximum crew, Lead Mos, TG Breakerz, 20th Century Bboyz, Soul Kingz, Floor Gangz, Universal Crew, People crew and Visual Shock.
As the Korean bboying scene became internationally renowned, it sparked the Korean government for supporting to host Korea's own bboy championship for the international audience. R-16 Korea is one of the most recognized bboy championships that invites bboys from all around the world to now Asia's bboy capital South Korea.

Bboy scene in Korea has been proactive in blending the bboying style with other dance forms and inspirations. Whilst keeping the essence of American style of bboying, many bboys in Korea have infused their own traditional style into bboying. With elements of Korean traditional dances like Pungmul (which also incorporates head-rotating and complex jumps) and Taekwondo-inspired moves, Korean bboys have benefitted from taking two different cultural styles and putting into one unique style. In 2006, the apartment company e편한세상 released a TV ad where bboy members from Last for One were shown dancing to a hip-hop remix of Pachelbel's Canon blended with the traditional Korean Gayageum. The mix of cultures caught a global audience on Youtube. Since then various hip-hop/Korean-traditional hybrid music bands began to appear with examples like Sorea (Sound of Korea) which made the hit track 'Seoul in Panic'.
Korean-American director Benson Lee has captured this 'blending' phenomenon very well in his bboy documentary Planet Bboy where there is a scene of Korean bboys reflecting the North-South Korea conflict. North and South Korean guards (all played by South Korean bboys) battle out in the DMZ border.

As it is hard to have a stable income source for bboys, many crews have ventured out to doing theatrical performances and musicals. Since 2006, Expression crew have been performing a new style of bboying called the Marionette, which incorporated puppet-like movements and was responsible for influencing JabbaWockeeZ crew who have succuessfully used this style during their performances on America's Best Dance Crew. Extreme crew has combined Ballet with Bboys as they ventured into the musical 'Ballerina who fell in love with a bboy' (비보이를 사랑한 발레리나).
Hip hop dancing is also pretty popular in Korea. Some well known hip hop dance groups include Prepix.


Another well known dance group, is popping group K-OGS. Their member Pop Kun won the UK BBoy Championship in 2008 Other well-known popping groups are Cyborg G (Popping Hyun Joon, well-known member of the dance community), FREEZE and Newest35.

Aside from various dances involved in hip-hop, Krumping has also become popular within a niche underground supporters. The krumping crew Monster Woo Fam lead by Monster Woo has been one of the many crews that have gained a great international attention via Youtube.

As the underground hip-hop scene became increasingly popular throughout the 2000s, people started taking interests in various subcultures within hip-hop. With cyphers in Hongdae playground and annual freestyle competition/events such as Freestyle Day and Freestyle One, freestyle rapping really caught on to the underground listeners.

One of the leading artists who have been pioneering this freestyle-rap culture since the mid-2000s is Sool J. He is well known for winning Miller 2005 Freestyle Rap Battle and has then set his goal in popularising this freestyle-rap culture. He was responsible for hosting the internet freestyling show Mic Swagger, where famous rappers are invited to have a freestyle session with him similar to Rap City over in the United States. He was also the founder of Freestyle Day and has toured all over South Korea to find young freestyling talents. He is currently hosting a 'no-beat' battle show called Boxer. Other artists who have been heavily associated with freestyle rapping would include Huckleberry P (of Pinodyne), JJK, Dragon A.T, Dumbfoundead and many more.

As the aftermath of heated freestyle battles can end up in a violent manner from time to time, a new type of battle was invented in Korea in order to encourage freestylers and hip-hop fans to maintain peace and respect. It is called 'compliment battle' (칭찬배틀) whereby the competitors have to freestyle not against their opponents, but to freestyle about their admiration for them and to praise each other's skills and success. The winner of this battle is measured by the skills, wit and also their sincerity of respect. Compliment battles are usually carried out at the end of a normal freestyle battle, which leaves both of the opponents feeling more-or-less respectful of each other and prevents any aftermath violence/hatred.

BeatBox

Beatboxing is a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of producing drum beats, rhythm, and musical sounds using one's mouth, lips, tongue, and voice. It may also involve singing, vocal imitation of turntablism, and the simulation of horns, strings, and other musical instruments. Beatboxing today is connected with hip-hop culture, being one of "the elements", although it is not limited to hip-hop music.[1][2] The term "beatboxing" is sometimes used to refer to vocal percussion in general (see vocal percussion for details).


Beatbox merupakan salah satu bentuk seni yang mengfokuskan diri dalam menghasilkan bunyi-bunyi ritmis dan ketukan drum, instrumen musik, maupun tiruan dari bunyi-bunyian lainnya, khususnya suara turntable, melalui alat-alat ucap manusia seperti mulut, lidah, bibir, dan rongga-rongga ucap lainnya. Pemain beatbox atau lebih dikenal dengan beatboxer, mampu mendemonstrasikan segala bentuk bunyi-bunyian dengan handal. Beatbox selalu dikaitkan dengan vokal perkusi maupun dengan multivokalisme. Meskipun pada dasarnya sama, namun secara umum perbedaan Beatbox terletak pada keterkaitannya dengan budaya dan musik Hip Hop. Graffiti






Graffiti (singular: graffito; the plural is used as a mass noun. Also known as Graff) is writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place. 
  Stickers and other adhesives are not considered graffiti. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.
In modern times, paint, particularly spray paint, and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials. In most countries, marking or painting property without the property owner's consent is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime. Graffiti may also express underlying social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles. Within hip hop culture, graffiti has evolved alongside hip hop music, b-boying, and other elements. Unrelated to hip-hop graffiti, gangs use their own form of graffiti to mark territory or to serve as an indicator of gang-related activities.
Controversies that surround graffiti continue to create disagreement amongst city officials/law enforcement and writers who wish to display and appreciate work in public locations. There are many different types and styles of graffiti and it is a rapidly developing art form whose value is highly contested, reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction.

Breakdance (Street Dance)






B-boying or breaking, often called breakdancing, is a style of street dance that originated as a part of hip hop culture among African American and Latino youths in New York City during the early 1970s. Fast to gain popularity in the media, the dance spread worldwide especially in South Korea, France, Russia, and Japan. While diverse in the amount of variation available in the dance, b-boying consists of four primary elements: toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes. B-boying is typically danced to hip-hop and especially breakbeats, although modern trends allow for much wider varieties of music along certain ranges of tempo and beat patterns.
A practitioner of this dance is called a b-boy, b-girl, or breaker. Although the term "breakdance" is frequently used to refer to the dance, "b-boying" and "breaking" are the original terms. These terms are preferred by the majority of the pioneers and most notable practitioners.


Street dance, formally known as vernacular dance, refers to dance styles—regardless of country of origin—that evolved outside of dance studios in any available open space such as streets, dance parties, block parties, parks, school yards, raves, and nightclubs. They are often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and other dancers. These dances are a part of the vernacular culture of the geographical area that they come from. Two examples of street dance include b-boying (or breakdancing), which originated in New York City, and Melbourne Shuffle which originated in Melbourne, Australia.

Disk Jokey (DJ)






A disc jockey, also known as DJ, is a person who plays recorded music for an audience. Originally, "disc" (sometimes spelled "disk", although this is now uncommon) referred to phonograph records, not the later Compact Discs. Today, the term includes all forms of music playback, no matter the medium.
There are several types of disc jockeys. Radio DJs or radio personalities introduce and play music that is broadcast on AM, FM, shortwave, digital, or internet radio stations. Club DJs select and play music in bars, nightclubs, or discothèques, or at parties or raves, or even in stadiums. Hip hop DJs select and play music using multiple turntables to back up one or more MCs/rappers, perform turntable scratching to create percussive sounds, and are also often music producers who use turntablism and sampling to create backing instrumentals for new tracks. In reggae, the DJ (deejay) is a vocalist who raps, "toasts", or chats over pre-recorded rhythm tracks while the individual choosing and playing them is referred to as a selector. Mobile DJs travel with portable sound systems and play recorded music at a variety of events. According to a 2012 study there are approximately 1¼ million professional disk jockeys in the world.

Turntablism is the technique of manipulating sounds and creating music using phonograph turntables and a DJ mixer. One of the few first hip hop DJ's was Kool DJ Herc, who created hip hop through the isolation of "breaks" (the parts of albums that focused solely on the beat). In addition to developing Herc's techniques, DJs Grandmaster Flowers, Grandmaster Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore, and Grandmaster Caz made further innovations with the introduction of scratching.
Traditionally, a DJ will use two turntables simultaneously. These are connected to a DJ mixer, an amplifier, speakers, and various other pieces of electronic music equipment. The DJ will then perform various tricks between the two albums currently in rotation using the above listed methods. The result is a unique sound created by the seemingly combined sound of two separate songs into one song. Although there is considerable overlap between the two roles, a DJ is not the same as a producer of a music track.



In the early years of hip hop, the DJs were the stars, but that has been taken by MCs since 1978, thanks largely to Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash's crew, the Furious Five. However, a number of DJs have gained stardom nonetheless in recent years. Famous DJs include Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Mr. Magic, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Scratch from EPMD, DJ Premier from Gang Starr, DJ Scott La Rock from Boogie Down Productions, DJ Pete Rock of Pete Rock & CL Smooth, DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill, Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC, Eric B., DJ Screw from the Screwed Up Click and the inventor of the Chopped & Screwed style of mixing music, Funkmaster Flex, Tony Touch, DJ Clue, and DJ Q-Bert. The underground movement of turntablism has also emerged to focus on the skills of the DJ.

A typical modern DJ mixer generally has between two and six stereo channels for connecting and mixing audio sources. Each channel usually has a phono input with RIAA equalization for turntables and one or two line level inputs for sources such as CD players. Controls for individual channels are arranged in vertical columns (channel strips), starting with a switch or a knob selecting between the inputs. Below the input selector is a gain (or trim) control, used to match signal levels between channels. Next follows an equalizer section, used to fade parts of tracks in and out; a common basic technique is to kill the bass on one channel while mixing so the basslines of two tracks don't clash. A typical mixer features separate knobs for the low, mid and high frequency ranges. Some more controls may follow, such as a balance knob, built-in sound effects and aux-sends for external effects units. Below there's normally a cue switch sending the signal to the headphones, letting the DJ preview and beatmatch a track without sending it to the master output, but on some mixers there's a different way to select the cued source. The channel strip ends with a fader which sets the channel's signal volume in the final mix. The signal may pass through a crossfader. On simple mixers there are normally two channels assigned opposite ends of the crossfader, sometimes with a button to reverse the crossfader's direction. More advanced mixers have assignable crossfaders in which each channel can be assigned to either end of the crossfader or to bypass the crossfader entirely. Many scratch mixers have a crossfader curve control that effectively changes the distance the crossfader needs to travel to open the channel fully, letting to shorten it to a millimetre or two, which is useful for speedy scratching.
Additionally, one or two microphone inputs may be present to accommodate MCs. These can be configured either as additional inputs to main channels or as special microphone channels which are similar in structure, but normally have fewer controls and are often monaural. Most DJ mixers feature peak meters to aid matching levels between channels and monitor the signal for clipping. Usually there are peak meters for master mix and cued mix, though sometimes per-channel meters are present. A DJ mixer has one or two headphone connectors and a headphone volume control. Headphones are normally used to monitor a cued channel, but on some mixers other variants are possible, such as split cue where cued channels are sent to the left headphone channel and master mix to the right, or a way to select between cued channels and master mix. Normally there are two or more outputs for the master mix, used to send the signal to an amplifier or another mixer for the public address system, to a loudspeaker in the DJ booth for monitoring the mix, or to a tape recorder or a computer for recording. There may be one volume control for all outputs or separate controls for each outputs. Sometimes a recording output doesn't have a volume control.

A Computer DJ is defined as a DJ who uses a computer or laptop to play digital music encoded audio files, to a public crowd. Originally due to file size storage issues, this was usually using lossy codec files (e.g. .mp3/.aac), however as drive space increased, this improved to using original uncompressed PCM files (e.g. .wav/.aiff) which do not offer support for metadata, hence why latterly the metadata included and smaller file-sized lossless codec files (e.g. .flac/.m4a, ALAC) are used.
As well as a laptop or computer, MIDI controllers are also used to provide a more tactile and useful interface for control of DJ software by providing physical controls similar to those of record decks or CDJs and DJ mixers. External hard disk drives and audio interfaces (sound cards) are also commonly utilized. By using a sound card with multiple stereo outputs, or two sound cards, a Computer DJ can use a conventional DJ mixer by routing one software deck out of one sound card into one channel of the mixer, and likewise for the other deck. Some DJ software packages allow a single stereo channel to be broken into two mono outputs which correspond to two player decks.
Most DJ software allows the integration and manipulation of external audio inputs, and this has encouraged many DJs who have previously only used vinyl or CDs to integrate a laptop into their setup. Computer controllers can also be plugged in via a USB port for the convenience of their moving controls like knobs and sliding buttons in order to control the software in realtime. The setup allows for a single audio output from the sound card to the amplifier/powered speakers. The controller is beneficial also with scratching, smoother pitch & crossfading adjustments, and overall ease of performing functions as opposed to mouse-controlled DJ software operation.
A CPS (Computerized Performance System) can be programmed to manipulate audio and/or video, symbols, perform complex and repetitive mixing procedures quickly, precisely and reliably for recorded or live performance. CPS systems don't jump like traditional Compact Discs.
In 1998, manufacturers joined with computer DJing pioneers to offer professional endorsements, the first being Professor Jam (aka William P. Rader), who went on to develop the industry's first dedicated computer DJ convention and learning program, the "CPS (Computerized Performance System) DJ Summit". Computer DJing has since become popular with many professional electronic artists, though there is still considerable debate as whether or not the dependence on a computer in performance renders it ineligible for inclusion in the humanities. Producers like Magnetic Man, deadmau5 and Daft Punk use computer technology.

Rap













Rapping (also known as emceeing, MCing, spitting (bars), or rhyming) refers to "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics". The art form can be broken down into different components, as in the book How to Rap where it is separated into “content”, “flow” (rhythm and rhyme), and “delivery”
Rapping is distinct from spoken word poetry in that it is performed in time to a beat.
Rapping is a primary ingredient in hip hop music and reggae, but the phenomenon predates hip hop culture by centuries. It can also be found in alternative rock such as that of Cake and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rapping is also used in Kwaito music, a genre that originated in Johannesburg, South Africa and is composed of hip hop elements. Rapping can be delivered over a beat or without accompaniment. Stylistically, rap occupies a gray area among speech, prose, poetry, and song. The use of the word (meaning originally "to hit") to describe quick speech or repartee, long predates the musical form. The word had been used in British English since the 16th century, and specifically meaning "to say" since the 18th. It was part of the African American dialect of English in the 1960s meaning "to converse", and very soon after that in its present usage as a term denoting the musical style. Today, the terms "rap" and "rapping" are so closely associated with hip hop music that many use the terms interchangeably.


Rap adalah salah satu dari empat elemen budaya Hip-hop. Rap merupakan teknik vokal yang berkata-kata dengan cepat, sementara pelakunya disebut rapper. Biasanya, rap diiringi oleh DJ maupun sebuah band. Akan tetapi rap dapat ditelusuri kembali ke akar Afrika. Berabad-abad sebelum musik Hip-Hop ada, Afrika Barat telah memberikan cerita berirama yang bernama griots, lebih dari drum dan instrumentasi jarang. Koneksi tersebut telah diakui oleh seniman masa kini.
Biasanya, rapper seperti penyanyi biasa, yaitu bernyanyi solo. Contohnya adalah KRS-One, Nas, Jay-Z dan Kanye West. Ada pula rapper yang menjadi anggota band, misalnya Mike Shinoda dari Linkin Park. Umumnya, rapper berkulit hitam karena banyak rapper berasal dari daerah pinggiran di Amerika Serikat. Di antara sedikit rapper yang berkulit putih adalah Eminem dan Aesop Rock. Rapper sering disebut pula dengan MC ataupun Emcee (Master of Ceremony). Dan di Jamaika sendiri istilah rapper dapat disebut Dee-Jay seperti Sean Paul.
Di Indonesia sendiri musik rap telah berkembang dan menjadi salah satu genre musik yang digemari. Musisi-musisi lokal yang karya musik rap atau hip-hop nya telah meramaikan blantika musik Indonesia di antara nya adalah Iwa K, Neo, Soul ID, Saykoji, The Law, Mizta D, Fade to Black (Bondan Prakoso & Fade 2 Black), Wizzow Batik Tribe, 8 Ball dan masih banyak lagi. Dan yang terbaru adalah jenis musik Trip Hop yaitu perpaduan antara Jazz dan Hip-hop, salah satu musisi Trip Hop Indonesia yang kental unsur Rapnya adalah Aji Kikuta.
